How should one handle a UPSC interview? How fair/unfair is the interview procedure? Is there an ideological bias in selection of candidates? If yes, how do I manipulate my answers?
Imagine you are in love with a girl called government. You want to marry her but well, her father is a senior (and quite experienced) civil servant. You want to ask for her hand. How will you behave in a family dinner? You must not appear to be ignorant of the flaws of the government but you must tell them you love her with all her flaws and in fact marrying you will make her better. After all its parents, so please do not come out as an overconfident idiot.Like all parents, members have some quirks. Do not try to scratch there too much. But after marriage, you do not want to be bullied around by your in laws, so do not relent easily. Smile humbly and agree to disagree. All family members are important but two are extremely important. The chairman(father) and the lady member(the mother). Impress them and jointly they will overrule what other members think of you. There will be some uncle who would be given task to roughen you up a little because their daughter has her mood swings. Keep calm. They want to check whether you can handle her at her worse.Do not bluff. Nobody likes a liar. Remember they know way more about their daughter i.e the government than you do. You have met her on dates, they have seen her grow in front of their eyes.Respectful sense of humour and wit, always appreciated. Do not be monotonous and boring.Do not sound desperate. Smile but not like an ignorant immature and finally appear in control of the situationUltimately, its not any single answer which matters but overall environment and experience of the interview. Since the family has called you for dinner, they know you are good enough as far as material aspects are concerned, now they want to look beyond it into your attitude.P.S.:Just a brief background here. I got 157 in my first attempt in interview. I had scored very well in mains but lost out in interview, got IPS. Second time I got 176 and in this attempt I got 193. So it seems I have some locus standii on this topic.Lady aspirants should replace the gender terms with male ones and it would hold true for them.Sometimes even after your best effort, you might not be able to impress the girl’s parents. Its divine thing. Come back again and do not leave the love of your life.
Why are Canadian universities such as U of T, McGill and UBC ranked high globally while their admissions processes are not as competitive as the U.S. universities that are ranked below them?
Canada has some of the lowest foreign student tuitions of anywhere in the world, but you still pay a premium to attend as a foreign student (often 3 to 4 times the tuition that a resident would pay). While many Canadian universities are very well rated, they also have a reputation for not being particularly easy or forgiving. If you can't cut it, you're out. Schools like Yale and Harvard run somewhere around a 98-99% freshman retention rate. I think that UoT is around 91% and they brag about their high retention rate. To keep your entrance scholarship at a university like McGill you need to keep a 3.7 GPA. US Colleges typical require a 3.0. (though it may be more stringent for specific schools or scholarships) In short, the Canadian admission process is an extension of a socialist culture. The universities will do everything possible to give everyone a fair chance. If the admissions people think that you have a good chance of being successful, you can get in. However, to give everyone that chance, they need the slackers to fail fast and make room for the people who are serious about their education. Finally, US universities are particularly attractive to foreign students (and domestic) because of the opportunities that a US education opens up for US jobs. (There are about 17-18M full time jobs in Canada and about 120M in the US) Even if the students go back to their home country, they'll have a better chance of working for a local subsidiary of a US company or a company that does business with a US entity. Canada just doesn't have that same pull. That's just my opinion, of course. As a Canadian ex-pat, I'm a bit biased.
What will I learn by exploring Tolkien's Middle-Earth deeply (as opposed to just reading The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit)?
There are any number of possible answers to this.A cynic might reply that you'll learn multiple reams of data, names, places, dates, legends that have absolutely no earthly use. You'll spend months of your limited lifetime perusing the ramblings of a Luddite Oxford don that will never earn you a plug nickel.A casual fan might say they're perfectly satisfied with the LotR and The Hobbit. They tried the Appendices and found they make a great cure for insomnia.A person like myself (see topic bio) would tell you to dive in, the water's great. That by reading, rereading, studying critical works etc. you'll make Middle-earth your own. You'll own those books and that world in a way only a devoted fan can understand. That sense of ownership is real. It's what makes many of us such harsh (irrational some may claim) critics of interpreters like Peter Jackson and Ralph Bakshi. You may find that your studies take you in unexpected directions. (Way leads on to way.) Tolkien too had his sources, some fans find pleasure in seeking those out and find themselves immersed in medieval tales and Icelandic legends. Others find themselves drawn to linquistics, Old English, and Elvish languages. All of these answers are true, for the person speaking. Only you can decide what you'll gain and you can only find out by wading up to the shore and wetting your toes.So how do you do that? I have two suggestions. First, check out this website: Customize Your Tolkien Book List fill out the form and see what reading suggestions it spits back. Give them a try. My second suggestion is to check out a few lectures by the Tolkien Professor. Corey Olsen is a professor of medieval studies and a Tolkien scholar (I don't use that term loosely*). The Tolkien ProfessorI'd specifically recommend the Undergraduate Tolkien Survey, but most especially try: The Tolkien Professor | Introduction "How to Read Tolkien and Why" Then go to Undergraduate Tolkien Survey if you've only read The Hobbit and LotR skip to those lectures. All the lectures are available as free MP3 downloads. By giving these lectures a try you'll get a sense of how deeply committed fans read these works and what they see in them. Also recommended, any books on the subject by Tom Shippey.*John Savidge's answer to How does someone get to be a Tolkien scholar?

Do military members have to pay any fee for leave or fiancee forms?
NOOOOOOO. You are talking to a military romance scammer. I received an email from the US Army that directly answers your question that is pasted below please keep reading.I believe you are the victim of a military Romance Scam whereas the person you are talking to is a foreign national posing as an American Soldier claiming to be stationed overseas on a peacekeeping mission. That's the key to the scam they always claim to be on a peacekeeping mission.Part of their scam is saying that they have no access to their money that their mission is highly dangerous. If your boyfriend girlfriend/future husband/wife is asking you to do the following or has exhibited this behavior, it is a most likely a scam:Moves to private messaging site immediately after meeting you on Facebook or SnapChat or Instagram or some dating or social media site. Often times they delete the site you met them on right after they asked you to move to a more private messaging siteProfesses love to you very quickly & seems to quote poems and song lyrics along with using their own sort of broken language, as they profess their love and devotion quickly. They also showed concern for your health and love for your family.Promises marriage as soon as he/she gets to state for leave that they asked you to pay for. They Requests money (wire transfers) and Amazon, iTune ,Verizon, etc gift cards, for medicine, religious practices, and leaves to come home, internet access, complete job assignments, help sick friend, get him out of trouble, or anything that sounds fishy. The military does provide all the soldier needs including food medical Care and transportation for leave. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I am just trying to show you examples that you are most likely being connned.Below is an email response I received after I sent an inquiry to the US government when I discovered I was scammed. I received this wonderful response back with lots of useful links on how to find and report your scammer. And how to learn more about Romance Scams.Right now you can also copy the picture he gave you and do a google image search and you will hopefully see the pictures of the real person he is impersonating. this doesn't always work and take some digging. if you find the real person you can direct message them and alert them that their image is being used for scamming.Good Luck to you and I'm sorry this may be happening to you. please continue reading the government response I received below it's very informative. What form does a soldier in the military need to fill out to add someone they are married to in the military data base?
What form does a soldier in the military need to fill out to add someone they are married to in the military data base? The soldier must take a copy of the marriage certificate to his personnel office to get his spouse enrolled in DEERS and fill out a DD 1172. He must update his DD 93 and should (but is not required to) update his SGLI beneficiaries.None of this costs any money at all. Since all of this information is readily available to anyone who is actually in the military, my guess is that you are falling victim to a scammer.Military Romance Scams by Sean Sanders on Posts
